The notes, marker by marker

Written after the run, usually the same evening, always about ground somebody here has actually covered. Newest at the top.

  1. A calm twelve weeks towards a half marathon in spring

How a group that meets to run easy builds towards a spring half marathon: one long run, one honest session, and nine weeks of leaving things alone.

  2. Knowing when a pair of running shoes is actually finished

Mileage is a poor way to retire a shoe. What the midsole, the outsole and the upper each tell you, and how running two pairs changes the answer.

  3. Winter on packed snow: what actually changes on the riverside

Three kinds of winter footing on the Kaunas embankments, how pace and effort come apart in the cold, and the fortnight we give up on the river.

  4. The oak park hills, and how not to turn them into a workout

How we use the long diagonal climb and the wooden steps in the oak wood on ordinary evenings, and why we almost never run either of them hard.

  5. The Tuesday loop: eight kilometres at a pace that lets you talk

The eight-kilometre loop we run on Tuesday evenings along both embankments, why the pace stays conversational, and where it turns for home.

Ground we use

Four loops, and what each one is for

Distances are the ones we tell newcomers, measured with a wheel on a Sunday and rounded to something everybody can remember.

The Tuesday loop

TarmacTuesday evenings

Downstream on the Neris, across at the confluence, home on the far bank. Flat, lit at both ends, and the only loop everybody knows by heart.

10.4km

The oak wood diagonal

Sand + stepsThursdays

Eight hundred metres of steady climbing, then flat sandy paths between the trunks. Single file after dark, because of the roots.

6.0km

Confluence out and back

Exposed tarmacStill evenings

Short, open and entirely at the mercy of the wind along the Nemunas. Best in May, miserable in a westerly, worth it either way.

13.5km

The lake circuit

Gravel, snow in winterSunday mornings

Forty minutes to get out there and back, so never a weekday. A circuit you can leave after any lap, which is why it suits long runs.

House pace

Four things we say out loud

River Loop Runs is an informal Tuesday-evening running group in Kaunas, looping the Nemunas and Neris embankments at a pace that keeps everybody in the conversation. These notes are a record of what the ground, the weather and four years of easy kilometres have taught us.

  1. Easy means you can finish the sentence you started.
  2. The slowest person on the night sets the pace.
  3. Never let the hills become the hard part by accident.
  4. Check the surface before you check the forecast.
